In celebration of Another Land’s newly launched Lingering Oak Series, Raxenne Maniquiz, a graphic designer and illustrator from the Philippines, has created a series of illustrations centred around hands as vessels of care. Rich with her signature flora and fauna details, the illustrations also pay homage to the hand-drawn craft and labour at the heart of her practice. Formerly a full-time designer at a graphic design studio, the independent creative who loves what she does takes some time to share how she navigates creative fatigue.

Tell us about your illustrations for Another Land’s new Hand Series.

Raxenne Maniquiz (RM): I wanted to focus on the hands as vessels of care. I drew hands as the focal point of the artworks, surrounded by the calming ingredients of Another Land. I was thinking about hands tending to a garden, bringing plants to life.

That sounds magical. What does your creative process look like?

RM: I start with pen and paper first, drawing quick thumbnails of the artworks I want to draw. Then, I proceed to sketch digitally before finalising the art.

I imagine that your hands are central to your practice. Do you consciously think about caring for them?

RM: Yes, I do. Even more so now that I have been illustrating for such a long time. I stretch my drawing hand regularly and do light wrist exercises to maintain mobility.

Creative work can be fulfilling, but also physically and emotionally draining. How do you navigate burnout?

RM: I love working, and I work a lot so burnout is unavoidable. When this happens, I just rest. I reread my favourite books and rewatch shows or films that comfort me. It’s a way to switch my brain off for the time being.

Are there small self-care rituals that help sustain your relationship with your craft for the long term?

RM: Yes, I do love small rituals. When I wake up, I play my morning playlist. Lately, it’s the Lovely Day Radio on Spotify. Then I make myself some coffee before sitting down at my desk.

Is there a place in the world that is your “Another Land”? Somewhere you always return to for a reset.

RM: This is really a boring answer but there is no place like home. I love being in my bed, lounging in my living room, or cooking up comfort food in the kitchen. After a long day of work, coming home is truly a joy.

The Lingering Oak Hand & Body Wash and Rinse-free Hand Cleanser are now available for pre-order.

Raxenne Maniquiz is a graphic designer and illustrator from the Philippines. Her work depicts images of flora and fauna—mostly the kind endemic to her country—drawn with deep, painterly strokes and brilliant contrasts. These finely textured illustrations appear in brand campaigns, product packaging, apparel design, stationery, and published materials.

She has worked on projects for Adobe, Assouline, Bloomberg, Doubleday, L’Occitane, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Nike/Jordan, Pan MacMillan, Penguin Random House, Rizzoli, Shake Shack, Stefan Sagmeister, and Uniqlo to name a few. In 2021, she won the prestigious Young Gun award—an international, portfolio-based competition that identifies and celebrates today’s vanguard of young creatives.

Raxenne continues to explore flora and fauna as the subjects of her personal work. Her ongoing series on endemic flowering plants began in 2019 and continues with a set of illustrated distribution maps. Through these, she expands not only her drawing techniques but also her exposure to research being done on local plant species.[Text Wrapping Break]
