As the year comes to an end, ANOTHER LAND invited Stacy Tan—founder of YABAI YABAI—to reflect on the theme of Renew. Working across multiple collections each year, Stacy continually reimagines colour, form, and emotion to create patterns and products that brighten everyday life. We spoke to her about what renewal looks like behind the scenes: how she resets, restores, and regathers her energy to keep creating.

Could you tell us about the story behind your illustrations?

Stacy Tan (ST): The narrative follows a rose that leaves its familiar field in search of renewal, only to discover that renewal comes from within—through seeing the world, feeling deeply, and returning home transformed.

You left home in your early 20s (like the rose in the illustration!) to chase your dream of becoming a textile designer in Japan, and today you run YABAI YABAI across both Singapore and Tokyo. What was that experience like?

ST: The experience of pushing myself out of the door to start a life in Japan completely on my own was unforgettable, and it has shaped so much of who I am today. Learning a new language, navigating unfamiliar streets, figuring out how to live alone, and returning to design school again at 23—all of these were humbling, tough, and super enriching experiences. Those years taught me to be independent and decisive, especially when it comes to my life. And also, I can finally cook now!

Why is stepping outside your comfort zone essential—and what was your own moment of discomfort or challenge this year?

ST: Stepping outside of your comfort zone often feels unfamiliar, but I think it’s where you discover both your limits and your limitless potential. This year, moving between Singapore and Tokyo was challenging. There were many moments when I felt unsettled and questioned what “home” really meant. Through small daily reminders to stay grounded and to hold onto my sense of self wherever I am, I realised that home can be something universal that you carry within you.

Your work brings so much colour into everyday life. What does joy look like in your own creative process?

ST: Joy for me is the fascination of turning a small thought in my head into something tangible through textile making. Whenever someone feels happy wearing YABAI YABAI, or when I hear that they could relate to the story behind a pattern, it makes me super happy and fulfilled. Making things that let people feel seen and connected through colour and patterns is one of the most meaningful parts of my practice.

With your practice being so hands-on and physically demanding, how do you care for your body and maintain your well-being during peak production periods?

ST: Taking rests purposefully and stubbornly. I choose Saturdays to rest every week and have been doing so for the past few years. Letting the body and mind rest for one full day helps me recharge. I feel happy working on things when I feel refreshed and clear again.

What are you looking forward to as the year draws to a close?

ST: I’m looking forward to some quiet and meaningful time, to be present with myself and with the people around me. I’m also very excited for the many adventures that a new year always brings. Bring it on—I’m super ready!
